What's in a name? Why websitemagician?

Read the following article to find out.

I had been a professional magician for over twenty five years (until an accident falling off a stage forced my retirement) and a lot of the work of a professional magician is finding elegant solutions to problems. This is what I thrive on; my performance was very much characterized by invention, creativity and an understanding of human nature.

My approach to web design and development is based on my attitude to performance.

The role of the website is to communicate (usually to impart information) and engage your target viewer, that is all performance is about. If you can't communicate with your audience then you will never be a performer and if your website doesn't communicate with your target viewer then there is no point in having a website.

The first site that I built for myself was built entirely in Flash, it looked very pretty and everyone who saw it said that it was cool. It didn't generate any business by itself, okay if I gave the site address to anyone then I would probably get the gig, they just needed confirmation that I was professional in my approach to my job so it was no big deal. What it didn't do was drum up business by itself, nobody could find me.

Flash sites by their very nature are made up of images, even the text is an image of text. Search engines ignore images and consequently the site was never indexed.

Once I learned that lesson I tried some software to help me build a new site. The trouble was that it didn’t write very good code, yes I could see what it looked like and it was easy to insert things visually but ultimately the code, which I was assured, was too difficult for a schmuck like me, was dreadful and again the search engines didn't like it.

Third time lucky; I decided to learn how to code in HTML and now the sites that I build are developed from the bottom up and the code is all validated. With some search engine optimization (SEO) I started getting enquiries practically every day.

Once I built my own website and achieved good Google rankings with it I was asked to design and build sites for other magicians and performers.  This is the market that I originally went for after my accident but chance encounters led to me developing new websites for a more corporate market.

There is a need for Future Proof Websites; the Internet is changing constantly and the way sites are read by search engines is changing, perhaps, the most .

The browser developers have finally got together and are working together with the body (W3C) that oversees good website development to come up with a standard that will be adhered to by all browsers in the not too distant future. At present all browsers are free to read and interpret websites as they please, what this means to a website owner is that your site might look good in IE7, for example, but items are out of place or do not show up in Mozilla Firefox. When the new standards are in place the underlying code behind the website will have to adhere to the rules or the site will not show up in the search engines.

If you are wanting a new site built then now is the time to make sure that it is built up to the standards of the proposed new rules.

I am in an ideal position to build your future proof site.

  • My websites are well designed, clean, elegant and generally geared towards the corporate market. They are hand coded and adhere to the proposed new rules.
  • I write standards compliant HTML and XHTML have a working knowledge of PHP and MySQL Databases. I build full Content Management System (CMS) sites around the Joomla core.
  • Using Flash I can design and implement headers, intro's as well as install Flash videos on your site.
  • I design and write JavaScripts.
  • In line with modern standards, I design and write CSS.

"My name is Dave Brown and this....is what I do to earn a living"

The above line was how I would end my performance as a comedy magician.  The audience had been subjected to 45 minutes of very precise magical mayhem and they would laugh out loud at that simple line - that one line encapsulated my world but, more importantly, it allowed the audience in to be part of it.

"My name is Dave Brown and this....is what I do to earn a living"

Welcome to my world.
